Tragedy averted: 3 fishermen rescued from distressed fishing trawler

Amid adverse weather conditions, three (03) fishermen were plucked to safety by the Sri Lanka Navy in a dedicated search and rescue (SAR) mission on 19 Jul 25. Their fishing trawler, battered by severe weather two nautical miles (4km) off Palliyawatta, Wattala, was located in a swift SAR operation. The survivors were brought ashore to Dikowita Harbour and handed over to the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DFAR) for onward action.

A dinghy carrying three (03) fishermen who had set out for fishing from the Palliyawatta beach area in Wattala on the 18 Jul, had encountered a distress in the seas about 02 nautical miles (04 kilometers) off Palliyawatta due to the malfunction of its outboard mortar.

Based on information received in this regard, the Navy immediately deployed a Fast Attack Craft belonging to the Western Naval Command to rescue the fishermen on board the distressed fishing trawler.

Accordingly, during the SAR operation, the three (03) fishermen aboard the distressed fishing trawl9 were successfully recovered unharmed. Following their retrieval, the individuals were transported to the Dikovita Harbour, where they received initial medical attention before being handed over to the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources for further proceedings.
