Port City Mall opened : President outlines new plan

President Ranil Wickremesinghe has revealed plans to redevelop several of Colombo’s iconic buildings to boost tourism, with renovations already in progress.

“The police headquarters has been relocated, and the Foreign Ministry is moving to a new building. Republic Square will be renovated, and new buildings will be constructed in the area to create a tourist zone,” President Wickremesinghe said during the opening of “The Mall,” a duty-free shopping complex in Colombo Port City.

He also noted that the old post office, the old port, its jetty, and the old customs building would be repurposed for tourism. Additionally, with the naval headquarters moved to Akuregoda, new hotel developments are planned in the area. The current President’s House will also be integrated into efforts to grow the tourism sector, the President said.

Wickremesinghe stressed that it is important to attract more tourists in order to increase revenue for national development. (Newswire)
