A bus driver has been arrested for dangerously crossing a closed railway gate in the Warakawa area of Nawalapitiya, police said.
The incident occurred on July 17, when the bus, travelling from Laxapana in Ginigathhena to Kandy, approached the Warakawa railway crossing despite the safety gate being closed. Ignoring the risk, the driver maneuvered the bus through a narrow space on the opposite side of the gate.
Moments after the bus left the area, a passenger train travelling from Kandy to Nawalapitiya passed through the crossing.
The reckless act was captured on a CCTV camera installed at a nearby shop. Following a complaint by the railway gatekeeper, the Nawalapitiya Police arrested the driver. He was later released on bail.
Police confirmed that legal proceedings will be initiated against the driver in the Nawalapitiya Magistrate’s Court. (NewsWire)
