The excavation in search of alleged buried treasure near the Central Expressway construction site in the Wanduramba area of Veyangoda entered its third today (23rd), as workers encountered a massive rock which is being drilled as efforts to lift the rock using a crane were unsuccessful.
This excavation, initiated on November 21 under a court order from the Attanagalle Magistrate’s Court, aims to uncover what has long been speculated to be hidden treasure.
Over the years, the site has been a hotspot for treasure hunters, with multiple excavations and several arrests of individuals caught with treasure-hunting equipment. Despite the Department of Archaeology’s previous inspections, which found no treasure, the Police Special Task Force (STF) later discovered evidence suggesting something was buried underground.
The excavation is now being carried out under the supervision of the Department of Archaeology, Geological Survey and Mines Bureau, Veyangoda Police, Road Development Authority, and the Mirigama Divisional Secretariat. The search continues as officials work to uncover the mystery beneath the surface.
