3 Police officers transferred amid Probe into Writer’s arrest

Three police officers attached to the Athurugiriya Police, including a Sub-Inspector, have been temporarily transferred to the Mirihana Police Headquarters following allegations of misconduct during the arrest of popular author Kasun Mahendra Heenatigala.

Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasuriya has ordered a probe into the incident, which will be led by the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Colombo-South Police Division, according to Police Spokesman SSP K.B. Manathunga.

Mr. Heenatigala, a well-known writer and husband of actress Madhavee Anthony, alleges he was apprehended by three plainclothes officers while returning from a grocery shop near his residence in Habarakada on Friday evening. The officers reportedly claimed he was being arrested for not carrying his National Identity Card.

He further claims that during his transport to the Athurugiriya Police Station in a police three-wheeler, two officers handled him inhumanely by forcibly holding his arms. Upon arrival, Mr. Heenatigala alleges he and his wife, who had come to the station leaving their infant child following his call, were subjected to verbal abuse by the Officer-in-Charge and other officers present. He was reportedly released after being held for over two hours.
