367* : Wiaan Mulder reveals Brian Lara’s message

South African all-rounder Wiaan Mulder has revealed that West Indies legend Brian Lara encouraged him to go for the record after he declared his innings on 367 not out—just 33 runs short of Lara’s iconic 400* in Test cricket.

The moment came during the second Test against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo, where Mulder posted the highest individual score by a South African in Tests. His decision to declare shocked many in the cricketing world, with some praising the sportsmanship, while others viewed it as a missed opportunity.

“I’ve chatted a little bit to Brian Lara,” Mulder said on SuperSport. “He said I’m creating my own legacy but I should have gone for it. He said records are there to be broken and wishes that if I’m ever in that position again, I actually go and score more.”

Mulder earlier justified his decision by saying some records, like Lara’s 400*, are best left untouched. South Africa head coach Shukri Conrad reportedly shared that sentiment, supporting the young batter’s call.

However, former West Indies opener Chris Gayle strongly disagreed, saying on talkSPORT, “You’ve blown it big time. That doesn’t happen often. If you want to be a legend, you go and get it.”

Mulder’s 367* now stands as the fifth-highest individual score in Test history. South Africa will next play in a T20 tri-series involving Zimbabwe and New Zealand, starting July 14 in Harare. (Newswire)
