Sri Lanka’s Election Commission has published the expenses incurred by candidates who contested the 2024 Presidential Election.
The candidate with the highest expenditure in the election is Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Leader Sajith Premadasa with Rs. 1.13 billion.
As per the expenses, Sajith Premadasa has spent Rs. 936.26 million (936,258,524.60)
as a candidate and the SJB party has spent Rs. 194.09 million (194,087,715.04) for his election campaign.
Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe is the candidate with the second-highest expenditure in the Presidential Election. With an expenditure of Rs. 990.33 million (990,327,687.16) he is also the candidate with the highest expenditure among the independent candidates.
National People’s Power (NPP) candidate Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who won the Presidential Election, has informed the National Election Commission that he had not made any expenditure using his personal funds. Dissanayake however had spent Rs. 68,066.36 rupees as telephone and communication expenses. Meanwhile, the NPP, as his party, had reported an expenditure of Rs. 528.00 million (527,999,889.38) for the election.
Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) candidate Namal Rajapaksa had also not reported any expenditure out of his personal funds, but the SLPP has reportedly spent Rs. 388.94 million (388,939,085.00) for his election campaign.
Sarvajana Balaya Presidential candidate, businessman Dilith Jayaweera has reported an expenditure of Rs. 324.64 million (324,643,246.05) which is said to have been borne out of his personal funds.
The expenditures have been reported as per the Regulation of Election Expenditure ACT, which makes it mandatory to submit all the facts regarding the money spent by each candidate in the 2024 presidential election. (Newswire)
