Using digital screens for election campaigning in any district or city is illegal, according to the Election Commission.
Commissioner General of Elections Saman Sri Rathnayake said that if such campaigning is observed, the nearest police station should be informed.
“If a digital screen is being used for any type of election campaign in your district or town, please inform the nearest police station. The police will then take the necessary action. This is completely illegal activity. Paying for or displaying advertisements is prohibited, as it is equivalent to putting up a poster in a public space. Therefore, broadcasting advertisements on digital screens is entirely forbidden,” he said.
Rathnayake noted that during previous elections, court rulings reinforced this stance, and authorities intend to approach the court as necessary. (NewsWire)
