The government is yet to make a decision regarding potential new taxes on imported vehicles, according to Cabinet Spokesman Nalinda Jayathissa. Speaking at a press briefing yesterday, he said the Finance Ministry would issue an official statement on the matter in due course.
The remarks come amid rising interest from vehicle importers following the government’s decision to lift restrictions on private vehicle imports. Importers have called on the government to permit the import of hybrid vehicles from Japan, up to seven years old, to meet market demand.
However, Minister Jayathissa clarified that the Cabinet had not discussed the proposal during its recent meeting. He added that such suggestions could be considered only if a formal proposal was submitted by the Finance Ministry after consultations with vehicle importers.
The lifting of vehicle import restrictions has sparked widespread debate, with questions about the affordability of vehicles and the implications of potential new taxes dominating discussions.
Further updates on the matter are expected once the Finance Ministry reviews the proposals and announces its decisions. (Newswire)
