Sri Lanka Police has highlighted the laws concerning high-capacity motorcycles in Sri Lanka, pointing out that there are two special government gazettes relevant to this matter.
Issuing a statement, the Police said regulations related to high-capacity motorcycles fall under Extraordinary Gazette No. 1757/32, dated May 18, 2012, and Extraordinary Gazette No. 1758/32, dated April 11, 2013.
The Police further said according to Section 19 of the Motor Traffic Act, motorcycles registered in Sri Lanka must have an engine capacity not exceeding 450cc.
The Police noted that, however, the Extraordinary Gazette dated April 11, 2013, permits the use of motorcycles with an engine capacity between 450cc and 1001cc strictly for sports activities and training purposes.
“To use such motorcycles, special approval must be obtained from either the Ministry of Defence or the Ministry of Urban Development. During the approval process, the applicant must pay a surcharge to the Department of Motor Traffic and register the motorcycle,” the Police said.
The Police added that when registering the motorcycle, a condition will be added to its registration book stating that these motorcycles cannot be used on public roads but are limited to racetracks. (Newswire)
