Former Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa and three other suspects who were arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) were ordered to be released on two surety bails of Rs. 2.5 million each by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court.
Yapa and his wife were arrested last evening for allegedly misappropriating Rs. 6.1 million allocated for flood relief in 2014.
According to the Police Media Spokesperson, the funds were obtained through the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation under the pretense of providing assistance to flood victims in Bingiriya and Narammala.
However, the funds were allegedly used for presidential election campaigning in 2015.
The arrests were made based on instructions from the Attorney General. (Newswire)
