Bribery complaint lodged over release of 323 containers

Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Harshana Rajakaruna has lodged a complaint with the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) over the release of 323 containers without inspection, alleging a significant loss of government tax revenue.

Rajakaruna questioned the identities of those behind the containers and whether they belonged to businessmen linked to the government. He also raised concerns about national security, suggesting that without proper checks, the containers could have contained illegal drugs or weapons.

His remarks follow claims by the Customs Trade Union Alliance that 323 red-alert containers, which were flagged for mandatory inspection, were cleared without proper checks.

When asked if his complaint was directed at the Western Province Governor, Rajakaruna stated that his concern was about whether the government was favouring its allies.
