Special traffic plan for 77th Independence Day in Colombo

Sri Lanka’s 77th Independence Day celebrations will take place tomorrow (Feb 4) at Independence Square and surrounding areas in Colombo.

Police Media Spokesperson SSP Buddhika Manatunga said that over 1,000 police officers have been deployed for security.

A special traffic plan will be in place, restricting several key roads, with special security checks for invitees attending the event near the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation.

The following roads will be closed:

– Bauddhaloka Mawatha
– Torrington Junction and Premakeerthi de Alwis Mawatha
– R.S.P. Junction (towards State Administration)
– Vidya Mawatha at Wijerama
– R.G. Senanayake Mawatha, (Independence Roundabout and Maitland Crescent)

-Independence Avenue
– Stanley Wijesundara Mawatha (Sri Lanka Foundation Mawatha Junction towards Independence Avenue)
– Library Roundabout towards Horton Roundabout
– Foundation Junction to Independence Avenue

However, Police said residents of these areas will be permitted entry upon valid identification and proof of residence. 

Alternative routes for vehicles entering Colombo:  

– Vehicles from Nanda Motors can turn right at Independence Roundabout and continue via Philip Gunawardena Mawatha, Stanley Wijesundara Mawatha, and Bauddhaloka Mawatha toward Thummulla and Borella Cemetery.  

– Vehicles traveling from Bauddhaloka Mawatha to Horton Roundabout can use Wijerama Mawatha.  

– Vehicles from Wijerama Junction can proceed toward Borella Cemetery and Thummulla.
