A 68-year-old Russian woman was rescued from drowning at Hikkaduwa Beach by the Hikkaduwa Police Lifesaving Unit on Wednesday evening.
According to police, the tourist was caught in a strong current while swimming and was being dragged away by the waves when officers on duty swiftly intervened.
The rescue operation was carried out by Police Inspector Sirimal, along with Police Constables 96221 Duminda, 101510 Kumara, and 105456 Jayasinghe, who managed to bring the woman safely to shore.
The woman is reported to be in stable condition, while authorities have reiterated warnings about strong currents in the area.
