Customs charges duties even for donated laptops – Ranjan

NewsIsland.LK

Sri Lanka Customs charged over Rs. 2.2 million in duty for laptops that were donated by a Sri Lankan residing in the USA for students in need, former Parliamentarian Ranjan Ramanayake said.

The actor-turned-politician said this was the first time such a tax had been imposed on laptops given as donations.

“We were charged Rs. 2,286,000 as tax by the Customs. They said it was due to the VAT at 18%. We have never been taxed for donated laptops before,” he said.

Ranjan Ramanayake expressed these views while addressing an event held to distribute over 200 laptops to Sri Lankan students in need.
