Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena announced in Parliament that the government refuses to accept the Supreme Court’s decision to suspend Deshabandu Tennakoon from exercising the powers of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP).
Gunawardena urged the Speaker to issue a ruling rejecting the SC’s interim injunction against the IGP.
Gunawardena emphasized that the post of IGP is not vacant, thus preventing the President from appointing an acting IGP.
The government’s stance sets up a significant conflict between the executive branch and the judiciary.
