A total of 3,882 individuals linked to the 2022 Aragalaya protest movement have been charged under nine different laws, according to a letter addressed to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake requesting justice for those affected.
The letter, signed by civil society representatives and lawyers, highlights that 11 people lost their lives during the protests, but compensation has been granted only to a selected few. It adds that the remaining families are continuing to face severe hardships and have not received adequate support.
It also reveals that 709 investigations were carried out in connection with the protest movement, leading to the arrests of thousands of individuals. The legal proceedings against them span a wide range of legislation, raising concerns over the proportionality and fairness of the actions taken.
The letter calls on the President to ensure justice for all affected individuals and urges the government to take steps to address the grievances of the victims and their families.
