SLPP State Minister Pramitha Bandara Tennakoon says that he will support President Ranil Wickremesinghe despite the SLPP deciding not to support the President.
“Immaterial of the decision made by the political bureau of the SLPP, together with the majority of parliamentary members, I will continue to support President Ranil Wickremesinghe in the upcoming presidential election, who rescued the country at the most crucial time,” he said.
Earlier today, the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) decided to field its own candidate in the upcoming Presidential election.
SLPP General Secretary MP Sagara Kariyawasam said the SLPP candidate will contest under the SLPP’s ‘Pohottuva’ symbol.
Speaking to the media, he further said that as the SLPP has decided to field its own candidate, it will not be able to extend its support to incumbent President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
“Some objected to the party’s decision, while a majority accepted. If any party member opposes this decision and if anyone from the party contests for the presidential election without the party’s approval, disciplinary action will be initiated against them,” MP Kariyawasam added.
The SLPP took a decision on the party’s Presidential Candidate during a meeting of its politburo held at the official residence of party leader Mahinda Rajapaksa today. (Newswire)
