New Zealand Deputy PM meets Opposition Leader

Visiting New Zealand Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Winston Peters met with Sri Lanka’s Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa at the Opposition Leader’s office in Colombo.

Peters, accompanied by a senior delegation, engaged in discussions with Premadasa and several opposition lawmakers. Talks focused on bilateral cooperation, Indo-Pacific geostrategic issues, and shared challenges as trade-dependent island nations.

During the meeting, Premadasa requested New Zealand’s support in addressing Sri Lanka’s ongoing economic crisis and emphasized strengthening cooperation in trade, investment, vocational training, tertiary education, renewable energy, and regional partnerships under RCEP.

He also proposed expanding a 2013 dairy cooperation agreement to reduce Sri Lanka’s reliance on milk imports. Additionally, the Oppostion Leader suggested forming a Sri Lanka–New Zealand task force on higher education and skills development. (Newswire)
