Drunk driver takes two lives at pedestrian crossing

Two women were reported dead, and two young girls were injured after being hit by an intoxicated motorist at a pedestrian crossing near the Nayagoda Bridge in Moragahahena.

The Police said the women were struck by a car driving towards Colombo on the Colombo-Horana main road last night.

One injured woman had died while being admitted to the Wethura Hospital, and another after being admitted to the Kalubowila Hospital. The deceased women are aged 45 and 50 years, and are residents of Bandaragama and Maggona. 

Meanwhile, a 13-year-old girl who was also injured in the accident has been admitted to the Colombo National Hospital, while the other 17-year-old girl is receiving treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Kalubowila Hospital.

The Police said the 28-year-old driver of the car has been arrested over the accident, while investigations have found that he had driven under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.
