The second phase of the Chemmani mass grave exhumation reached its third day on Friday, with three additional human skeletons unearthed under judicial oversight in Jaffna.
The exhumation was conducted under the supervision of Jaffna Magistrate A. Anandaraja. Judicial Medical Officer Dr. Pranavan Sellaiah and Professor of Archaeology Raj Somadeva were present at the site during the day’s proceedings. With the latest findings, the total number of skeletons discovered now stands at 27, of which 22 have been exhumed.
The Chemmani mass grave, located on the outskirts of Jaffna, has garnered international attention. Earlier this week, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk visited the site, describing the experience as “emotional” and underscoring the need for “robust investigations” by independent forensic experts.
At least 19 sets of remains were initially identified at the site, including those of three infants. The grave is among several discovered across Sri Lanka, where thousands disappeared during the country’s nearly three-decade-long civil war.
Family members of the missing continue to call for truth and accountability. “This is a step further towards justice,” said the High Commissioner, who met with relatives during his visit. (Newswire)
