Malwathu Maha Viharaya refutes reports on request from MR

The Malwathu Maha Viharaya in Kandy has denied claims that former President Mahinda Rajapaksa had made a request seeking its intervention to prevent the arrest of former First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa. 

The clarification comes over social media reports stating that former President Mahinda Rajapaksa had made such a request from the Malwathu Maha Viharaya.

Issuing a statement, the Malwathu Maha Viharaya said the news report was misleading and baseless.

The Malwathu Maha Viharaya further said that no such meeting or telephone conversation had taken place, as claimed by the news report.

Legal action will be initiated against persons or institutions that spread such false information with the aim of causing public unrest, it warned. 

The clarification was issued by the Deputy Registrar of the Malwathu Maha Viharaya, Venerable Mahawela Rathanapala Thero, on a directive of the Chief Prelate of the Malwathu Chapter. (Newswire)
