Rain expected in some areas today

Several spells of showers are expected in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as in Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle, and Matara districts today.

According to the Department of Meteorology, a few showers may occur in the North-western province.

Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the Uva province and in Ampara and Batticaloa districts during the afternoon or night.

Fairly strong winds of about 30-40 kmph can be expected at times over the Western slopes of the central hills and in the Northwestern, North-central and Southern provinces.

Meanwhile, the Naval and fishing communities have been warned of strong winds and rough seas in the seas surrounding Sri Lanka today.

According to the department, showers will occur at several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle.

Winds will be Westerly to South-westerly and wind speed will be 30-40 kmph. Wind speed can increase up to 50-60 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota.

Wind speed can increase up to 45 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Kankasanthurai via Mannar.

The sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota may be rough or very rough at times. The sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Kankasanthurai via Mannar may be fairly rough at times.

The wave height of about 2.5 – 3.5 m may increase in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota. Therefore, there is a possibility that nearshore sea areas extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota may experience surges due to sea waves. (Newswire)
