Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has raised security concerns with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) due to ongoing anti-immigrant riots in the UK. With protests and counter-protests erupting in various cities, including Manchester, where Sri Lanka’s first Test is scheduled on August 21, players already in England for pre-series training have expressed anxiety.
The ECB responded by reassuring SLC about the comprehensive security measures in place, including a dedicated security liaison for the tour. Despite these assurances, the Sri Lankan contingent has requested additional security while they await the arrival of the main team on Sunday.
Sri Lanka’s team manager Mahinda Halangoda, who is still in Sri Lanka, told ESPNcricinfo that he had raised concerns with ECB after seeing news reports from Manchester – where the team play their first Test from August 21 – in particular.
“I raised the issue with them, but the ECB responded very quickly and sent us their comprehensive security arrangements,” Halangoda said. “We’ll be having a security liaison on the tour from them as well.”
The UK government and police have also assured the safety of sports events, despite the unrest. The three-match Test series will continue as planned, with subsequent matches scheduled at Lord’s and The Oval. (NewsWire)
