Election bribery: Major arrest reported in Sri Lanka

A group of officials, including the Secretary of the “United Lanka Podujana Party” (Eksath Lanka Podujana Pakshaya), have been arrested for soliciting a bribe from the party’s presidential candidate, former PUCSL chairman Janaka Ratnayake.

According to Lankadeepa newspaper, officials of the Bribery Commission arrested them in Borella this afternoon, while accepting a bribe of Rs. 30 million from Ratnayake.

The arrest had been made following a complaint made to the Bribery Commission by Kamantha Thushara, Chairman of the Citizen’s Movement Against Fraud, Corruption, and Waste.

Janaka Ratnayake is the former Chairman of the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL), and is running for president as the candidate of the United Lanka Podujana Party. (Newswire)
