The Election Commission has issued a warning to a popular television channel for violating election media guidelines.
The Commissioner General of Elections, Saman Sri Ratnayake issuing a letter to the broadcaster said that the Commission has received a number of complaints against the channel’s reporting.
Out of these complaints, the Commission detailed the contents of a morning programme where defamatory statements were made.
The television channel had also engaged in unethical media practices, the Election Commission said, where an angoing court cases were discussed and one particular candidate was promoted.
Moreover, the Commission said that defamatory statements were made against political parties, whereas one party was clearly promoted, using public air waves and air time.
The Election Commission stressed that the channel must adhere to ethical media practices and the election media guidelines. (Newswire)
