Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa made a strong statement today, pledging to abolish the executive presidency if he is elected to power.
He criticized past leaders for making promises to change the presidential system but failing to do so once they assumed office. Premadasa emphasized that he has no desire for power or positions and will adopt a parliamentary democracy centered on the legislature once in power.
Premadasa accused the current President of protecting the Rajapaksa family, claiming that they have bankrupted and destroyed the country. He stated that the current President has become a protector of the Rajapaksas and acts as their police chief.
Premadasa reiterated that he has always faced challenges head-on, unlike others who might sidestep them. He pledged that in the upcoming presidential election, he will establish a new era that stands against corrupt political deals, emphasizing that he has no alliances with thieves or corrupt individuals.
He emphasized that he has not accepted any positions because of his refusal to make deals with corrupt individuals. He intends to come to power through the people’s vote and serve as a temporary custodian of the country, focusing on bringing justice to those who have wronged the nation.
Premadasa criticized the current era as one filled with revenge, hatred, and extreme misuse of power. He highlighted the increasing inequality in income distribution and the growing poverty in the country, stressing that more than half of the population is now impoverished with no solutions in sight.
He vowed to create an era free from corruption and dishonesty, claiming that his party, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, will bring about an economic revival. Premadasa criticized the current administration’s handling of the economy, noting that while they claim stability, the reality is that people are suffering from increased prices and hardships.
Premadasa accused the President of lavishly spending on luxury travels and awarding contracts to his close allies, while ordinary citizens are sinking deeper into poverty. He announced that September 21 will mark the beginning of an era that will liberate the people from this misery. (SJB)
