Weather forecast for Tuesday (20 Aug) –
Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and Northwestern provinces and Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts. Heavy showers above 100 mm are likely at some places in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and Galle and Matara districts. Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the Eastern, Uva and North-Central Provinces during the evening or night. Fairly strong winds of about 30-40 kmph can be expected at times over the Western slopes of the central hills and in the Northern, North-central and North-western provinces and Hambantota district.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle. Showers or thundershowers will occur at a few places in the other sea areas around the island during the afternoon or night. Winds will be south-westerly and wind speed will be 30-40 kmph. Wind speed can increase up to 55-60 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coasts extending from Kankasanthurai to Puttalam via Mannar and from Hambantota to Pottuvil. Wind speed can increase up to 50 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coasts extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle.

The sea areas off the coasts extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle may be fairly rough at times. The swell wave heights may increase about 2.5m–3.0m in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kalpitiya to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle. Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.

A total of 3243 persons from 929 families have been affected due to the inclement weather conditions experienced in the Kalutara, Puttalam, and Ratnapura Districts. Two people have been reported injured in the Puttalam District due to adverse weather in the area. 130 people from 45 families in the Puttalam District have been placed in safety shelters. (Newswire)
