A 30-year-old businessman was arrested this morning (01) at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) by officers of the Police Narcotics Bureau for attempting to smuggle a large stock of foreign-manufactured cigarettes into the country.
The suspect had arrived in Sri Lanka from Dubai and was apprehended while attempting to transport the illegal cigarettes out of the airport. According to police, the individual had concealed 20,000 sticks of foreign cigarettes, valued at approximately 3 million rupees, within his luggage, hidden among cosmetic products.
The arrested suspect, a resident of Panadura is reportedly involved in the import and sale of cosmetic products and ointments from foreign countries. Police are conducting further investigations into the incident. (NewsWire)
