The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officers stationed at the Katunayake International Airport arrested five men and one woman in connection with smuggling goods into Sri Lanka. The suspects, arriving from Bangalore and Chennai, were apprehended near the airport based on a tip-off.
Authorities discovered 159 bottles of foreign liquor, 175 packs of foreign cigarettes, mobile phones and accessories, designer clothing, and non-gold jewelry in their possession, all smuggled into the country without paying customs duties. The suspects, aged between 24 and 70, are residents of Wattala, Kotagala, Colombo 13, and one is an Indian national. A 48-year-old woman from Colombo 15 is also among the arrested.
Further investigations are being conducted by the CID’s airport unit. (Newswire)
