The Election Commission of Sri Lanka has issued a warning to presidential candidates regarding illegal campaigning activities ahead of the upcoming Presidential Election on September 21, 2024. The Commission has reportedly received complaints that some candidates have been promoting other presidential hopefuls, which is a violation of election laws.
In an official statement, Election Commission Chairman R.M.A.L. Ratnayake emphasized that all candidates are expected to campaign solely for their own victory. “Complaints have been lodged that certain candidates are campaigning on behalf of others, which is a clear breach of electoral law,” the statement read.
The Commission urged all candidates to refrain from such illegal activities and warned that any candidate found violating these rules would face legal consequences. Both the candidate promoting and the one being promoted would be held accountable under election laws.
