Former Sri Lankan cricketer Dulip Samaraweera has been banned from holding any position within Australian cricket for 20 years due to “inappropriate behaviour” towards a woman player.
The 52-year-old served briefly as the head coach of Victoria’s state women’s team. Cricket Australia’s Conduct Commission found him guilty of a serious breach of the organization’s code of conduct.
The commission’s quick decision underscores the need for addressing harassment and misconduct in sports. The action taken aims to ensure the safety and well-being of all participants in the sport.
Cricket Victoria’s chief, Nick Cummins, acknowledged the bravery of a victim who recently reported inappropriate behaviour. “It is crucial to acknowledge the courage it takes for individuals, especially women, to report such incidents, given the power dynamics and potential repercussions they may face,” Cummins stated as per AFP.
The Code of Conduct Commission’s ruling to impose a 20-year ban on Dulip Samaraweera has been met with strong approval from Cummins, as stated in his comments to cricket.com.au.
Cummins expressed that Cricket Victoria considers Samaraweera’s actions to be completely ‘unacceptable and a violation of the organization’s core values and principles. (TimesofIndia)
