Above 75 mm of rain expected in several areas today

Showers are expected in several districts of Sri Lanka today, with fairly heavy falls above 75 mm likely in some places, according to the Department of Meteorology.

Showers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, North-western and Central provinces and the Galle and Matara districts. 

Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the Uva province and the Ampara and Batticaloa districts during the evening or night. A few showers may occur elsewhere. 

Fairly heavy falls above 75 mm are likely at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Northwestern provinces and the Galle, Matara, Nuwara-Eliya and Kandy districts.

Fairly strong winds of about 30-40 kmph can be expected at times over the Western slopes of the central hills and in the Northern, North-central, North-western and Southern provinces and the Trincomalee district.

Meanwhile, the Naval and fishing communities have been warned of strong winds and rough seas today.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle. Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places over the other sea areas around the island.

The sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam and Mannar, and from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota, will be rough at times. The sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Galle via Colombo and from Kankasanthurai to Trincomalee via Mullaittivu will be fairly rough at times. 

The wave height may increase about 2.0 – 2.5 m in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota (this is not for land area). Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers. (Newswire)
