Sri Lankan actress Semini Iddamalgoda was released on bail Sunday, a day after her arrest by Welikada Police over what authorities initially described as outstanding warrants tied to financial fraud.
In a public statement issued after her release, Iddamalgoda disputed the characterization of the case, saying the matter stemmed from a misunderstanding related to labor court proceedings, not criminal financial misconduct. She said she was unaware of any court summons and learned of the warrants only upon arriving at the police station following a car accident involving her husband.
“At the station, a police officer told me there were warrants, which I initially thought was a joke,” Iddamalgoda said. “I had no knowledge of any such documents being issued against me.”
She explained the case involved unresolved matters linked to employee provident fund contributions at a private security firm owned by her. According to Iddamalgoda, seven court notices had been issued but sent to an old business address, preventing her from receiving them.
“All related payments have now been settled, and the documents were submitted to the court,” she said, adding that the magistrate granted her bail shortly after the facts were presented. (Newswire)
