The Department of Animal Production and Health has issued a Gazette notification declaring all Divisional Secretariats in Sri Lanka as areas of risk given the detection of African Swine Fever (AFS) and Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS).
As per the Gazette, every Divisional Secretariat is to be identified as an Infected area or suspected area of infection.
The Gazette notification, which outlines all preventive and containment measures, is effective for three months starting on 25 October 2024.
African swine fever is a highly contagious viral disease of domestic and wild pigs, while Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome is a respiratory syndrome seen more often in young growing pigs.
The African swine fever was initially reported for the first time in the Western Province and has now been detected in the Uva, Northern and North Western provinces as well.
