The Attorney General’s Department will not be invalidated with the setting up of the new prosecutor’s office, Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Nalinda Jayathissa said.
“The Attorney General, his department as well as the Bar Association are all represented in the setting up of this new office,” he said addressing the weekly Cabinet media briefing. The Minister made these comments in response to questions raised on how the government can assure that independence of legal proceedings be maintained.
“Investigations are ongoing and charges will be filed against the accused,” the Minister assured.
The comments come after the Attorney General’s recent controversial decision to discharge three suspects in the Lasantha Wickrematunge assassination case.
There appears to be very public and visible clash between the Investigators and the Attorney General, journalists pointed out, asking the Minister as to how a fair trial will be guaranteed in this case.
“Both the investigators and the Attorney General are state institutions. If they are in disagreement the government will intervene to resolve it. The government has made its stance clear. Therefore we will guarantee that justice will be delivered as we have no intention to protect criminals,” the Minister said. (Newswire)
