Speaking at a rally in Maradankadawala yesterday, National People’s Power (NPP) leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake announced that if his party comes to power, he will not convene Parliament as scheduled on October 8. Instead, he plans to dissolve Parliament and hold a general election, ruling the country constitutionally for one and a half months until the elections are completed.
Dissanayake highlighted that the Parliamentary session on September 3 marked the final sitting for over 150 current MPs, many of whom he believes will not be re-elected. He expressed confidence that the NPP would secure a massive majority in the upcoming election and emphasized his commitment to forming a new government based on this mandate.
“If we win, Parliament will not meet on October 8. It will only reconvene after a general election,” Dissanayake stated.
He underscored his belief that a significant portion of the current MPs would not return to Parliament, promising a major political shift under an NPP government. (Newswire)
