Army personnel from the Gemunu Watch regiment have rescued an individual who had jumped into the Nilwala River in Matara this morning intending to die by suicide.
The Army soldiers rescued the man, who had jumped off the Mahanama Bridge in Matara and rushed him to the Matara General Hospital.
It is reported that the Army soldiers who were stationed near the bridge had seen the man being swept away in the river after having jumped off the bridge.
Acting quickly, the soldiers used a boat placed near their camp to rescue the man after great effort.
The man who had attempted to end his life has been identified as a person between the ages of 50 to 60 years. (Newswire)
