Break-Fast at Sunset 2025: A Celebration of Humanity and Unity

Break Fast at Sunset, a multicultural celebration observed during Ramadan, was a grand success on March 16, 2025. Organized by Sri Lanka Muslim Civil Society (SLMCS), Soup Kitchen Sri Lanka, and Team Torrington, the event brought together approximately 2,200 individuals at Independence Square to enjoy the happiness of breaking fast together, transcending religious and social boundaries.

This year’s activity was more vibrant than ever with interactive stalls that promoted Islamic culture, including mehendi stalls, hijab try-on stall, calligraphy, and a “Get to Know Us” stall. The activity also included interesting performances, making the experience for everyone until the program closed at 7:30 PM.

With the support of 250 volunteers, the activity was still able to serve its function of creating unity. The first “Street Iftar” was initiated in 2015 by Soup Kitchen Sri Lanka, and the feeling of oneness persisted despite the difficulties during and after the Easter bombings of 2019 and the economic crisis. After a small event in 2022 during the Aragalaya, the Break-Fast at Sunset resumed full speed in 2023, and has continued to spread even more in influence and scope.

The organizers were deeply moved by the generosity of sponsors, donors, and volunteers who contributed in cash, kind, and time to make this event a success. Special thanks are due to the youth volunteers whose contributions helped add more festivity this year to the event. The officers, staff, and media team who organized the event facilitated it with their assistance for a seamless experience.

Most importantly, the organizers extend their heartfelt gratitude to all who graced the occasion despite the weather. The friendliness and fraternity that were showcased throughout the affair are the quintessence of what Ramadan is really all about humanity, compassion, and empathy rather than religion.

As Sri Lanka continues along its path of development, gatherings like Break-Fast at Sunset serve to remind all that it is only by being united that they will find prosperity. The vision is to continue organizing such gatherings, in which people from all walks of life come together, share, and look after one another not just during Ramadan, but the whole year through.
