Case file hidden until Govt change, President reveals AG Official’s move

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has revealed that a legal officer from the Attorney General’s Department admitted to withholding a case file to prevent interference during the previous administrations.

Speaking in Homagama, the President quoted the officer, who said, “If the case was filed at that time, it would have either led to her being removed or the case being sabotaged. Therefore, she decided to hold on to the file until a government committed to justice came into power.” The President commended the officer for prioritizing justice despite personal risks.

The President emphasized that law enforcement agencies, including the police, are functioning without government interference in corruption and fraud investigations. He addressed concerns about ongoing investigations, explaining that granting bail is part of the legal process and does not indicate leniency. Thorough evidence collection and timely case filing remain priorities, he said.

The Attorney General’s Department has identified 11 key cases, with three slated for filing in January, according to the President. He reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening institutions and ensuring justice and accountability.

“We are not selecting cases based on personal interests. Investigations must be conducted independently to uphold the integrity of the legal process,” he said. (Newswire)
