Two men have been arrested by the Negombo Divisional Crime Investigation Unit for extorting Rs. 2 million after demanding Rs. 10 million in ransom from a resident of Mallewagedara, Badalgama.
Police said the complaint was filed on June 9, alleging that the suspects had threatened to kill the victim and his child if the ransom was not paid. Investigators determined that Rs. 2 million had already been paid under pressure.
Officers arrested the suspects on June 17 in the Dambathure area under the Seeduwa Police Division, acting on received intelligence. The suspects, aged 32 and 46, are residents of Mattiyagane and Kotugoda. They were handed over to the Badalgama Police for further investigation.
Investigators said the suspects used the names of two known underworld criminals to intimidate the victim, although those individuals were not involved in the case.
Police recovered a toy pistol used in the extortion, a motorcycle used in the crime, a new motorcycle, and a three-wheeler reportedly bought with the extorted money. Several mobile phones, SIM cards, ATM cards from different banks, and vehicle-related documents were also seized. (Newswire)
