Colombo welcomes Thousands for Bohra Convention

The Dawoodi Bohra community’s spiritual convention is currently underway in Colombo, drawing over 10,000 devotees from around the world.

The event is being held at two main venues: the Sri Lanka Exhibition and Convention Centre (SLECC) in Fort and the Bohra Mosque, in Bambalapitiya (Colombo 4).

The week-long gathering, which began on June 27 and will continue through July 5, is being held in conjunction with the global Ashara Mubaraka sermons delivered by the community’s spiritual leader, His Holiness Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin, in Chennai, India.

While the main international event is taking place in Chennai, Colombo serves as a major regional hub for parallel religious and cultural programmes.

The Bohra Mosque in Bambalapitiya—located on Glen Aber Place—is a central landmark for the local Bohra community, and the SLECC provides a large indoor venue for sermons and events attended by both local and foreign participants.

The Sri Lankan government has implemented a comprehensive security and traffic management plan to support the event, with special vehicle restrictions in place in areas surrounding the venues.

Officials say hotels in Colombo are fully booked due to the influx of visitors, providing a welcome boost to the tourism and hospitality sectors. (Newswire)
