The Matara Magistrate’s Court has issued a foreign travel ban on former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon, preventing him from leaving the country.
The order comes amid an ongoing investigation into the fatal shooting incident that occurred near the W15 Hotel in Weligama on December 31, 2023, which resulted in the death of a Police officer and injuries to another.
The court had previously directed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to arrest and produce Tennakoon, along with eight other Police officers, as suspects in the case. However, Deputy Minister of Public Security Sunil Watagala recently stated in Parliament that Tennakoon is currently in hiding.
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake also commented on the situation, revealing that a key suspect had gone missing after leaving his residence without his security officer. While he did not name the individual, it is widely believed he was referring to Deshabandu Tennakoon.
The foreign travel ban aims to ensure the former IGP remains within Sri Lanka as the investigation continues. (NewsWire)
