A youth who was arrested by the Kosgoda Police has died after being admitted to the Balapitiya Base Hospital following a sudden illness.
Police said the suspect, who was reportedly heavily addicted to drugs, was taken into custody yesterday (01) in connection with a drug-related incident.
According to Police, the suspect fell unconscious inside the police cell due to a sudden medical emergency and was rushed to hospital, where he later died.
However, family members have alleged that the youth died as a result of assault by the Police.
Police maintain that the death was due to a medical condition and not linked to any wrongdoing by officers. (Newswire)
