Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa announced that Dr. Ruvaiz Haniffa will be the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) candidate for the post of Mayor of Colombo, with the aim of further developing the city into a world-class urban hub.
Premadasa said that residents of the Colombo Municipal area deserve a highly developed and modern city, and Dr. Haniffa is being presented as a leader capable of delivering that vision. He described Dr. Haniffa as a public-spirited, people-friendly professional, equipped with intelligence, knowledge, and leadership qualities necessary for good governance.
A medical professional by background, Dr. Haniffa has served in hospitals in Negombo, Ampara, and Sri Jayawardenepura, contributing to the care of thousands of patients. He is also an academic who currently lectures at the medical faculties of the Universities of Kelaniya and Colombo, with a special focus on strengthening free education. He also serves as a lecturer in Family Health and was among the founding members who established the Family Health unit at the University of Colombo.
Premadasa added that the SJB’s vision for Colombo is to create a prosperous and modern city with improved infrastructure, housing solutions, and new income-generating avenues.
