EU launches probe into four adult content websites

The European Commission has launched formal investigations into four major adult content website for potential violations of the Digital Services Act (DSA), citing concerns over inadequate protections for minors.

These platforms are classified as Very Large Online Platforms (VLOPs) under the DSA, a designation requiring enhanced safety measures due to their broad reach. According to the Commission, preliminary findings indicate insufficient age verification systems and a lack of risk assessments to reduce exposure of minors to harmful content.

Aylo, Pornhub’s parent company, acknowledged the investigation and said it remains committed to protecting children online. The other platforms have not issued public responses.

The Commission said the protection of minors is a priority and is working on an age-verification app expected to launch by summer. In parallel, EU member states are coordinating enforcement actions against smaller pornographic platforms.

If found in violation of the DSA, the implicated companies could face fines of up to 6% of their global annual revenue. (Newswire)
