The Welikanda Police report that 11 individuals, including two members of the military, were arrested along with three motor vehicles and a cab in the Namalgama area of Welikanda, on suspicion of attempting an archaeological excavation or engaging in a criminal act.
Among the suspects is a man from Badulla found in possession of a fake ID, military uniforms, and clothing resembling those worn by a brigadier. The other two military personnel are stationed at Trincomalee’s Hendrick Fort, according to the police.
The remaining eight suspects are residents of Yakkala, Padukka, Galewela, Millawa, and Tangalle, as revealed by ongoing investigations conducted by the Welikanda Police.
The arrests were made during a joint operation by the Welikanda Police and the Military Police from the Polhengoda Army Camp, following a tip-off provided by officers from the camp.
Investigations have further revealed that the individual posing as a brigadier is not affiliated with the military. (NewsWire)
