FCID complaint targets Sirisena-Era Rs. 27.5M Construction Project

A complaint has been filed with the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) today (20), alleging the misuse of Rs. 27.5 million from the President’s Fund during the tenure of former President Maithripala Sirisena in 2019.

The complaint was lodged by P.V. Lakshman Jayawardena, Vice Chairman of the Eppawala Cooperative Society. He claims the funds were allocated for constructing a conference hall on land belonging to the society, following a request made in 2017.

Construction began in January 2019, and several existing shops on the premises—along with their doors, windows, roofing sheets, and seating—were removed. These items have since gone missing, according to the complaint.

Jayawardena further states that while the estimated cost for the project was Rs. 130 million, it was initially launched with Rs. 73 million and labour from the Sri Lanka Army. A total of Rs. 27.5 million was eventually released, but the project remains incomplete.
