Former Anuradhapura Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Sanjeewa Mahanama has been arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) over his involvement in the shooting incident of former MP Uddika Premarathna.
An overseas travel ban was also ordered against the former ASP when the case was taken up before the Anuradhapura Chief Magistrate.
Earlier this year, it was revealed that a shooting incident involving former MP Uddika Premarathna’s vehicle was allegedly staged by the former MP himself, in collaboration with a ASP Mahanama.
The CID launched an investigation after being informed that an unidentified group had opened fire on Premarathna’s private vehicle, which was parked near his residence.
The shooting occurred on September 17, 2023, shortly after the former MP had parked his vehicle and was walking towards his home.
Police Spokesman DIG Nihal Thalduwa confirmed that the investigation uncovered Premarathna’s involvement in orchestrating the incident with the help of the ASP. (Newswire)
