Ganemulla Sanjeewa Murder : Gunman arrested

The suspect wanted over the shooting incident at a Colombo Court Complex today, killing underworld kingpin Ganemulla Sanjeewa, has been arrested.

According to the Police, the gunman was arrested from the Palaviya area in Puttalam today.

The gunman in the Hulftsdorp court shooting has been identified as 34-year-old Asman Sheriffdeen.

The suspect has been identified as a former member of the Sri Lanka Army Commando Regiment.

The man had disguised himself as a lawyer and had smuggled in the weapon used to carry out the shooting concealed inside a Code of Criminal Procedure book.

He had shot underworld kingpin Ganemulla Sanjeewa when the latter had taken the witness stand inside court number 05 regarding the case related to his remand.

Having sustained serious injuries in the shooting, Ganemulla Sanjeewa succumbed to injuries at the Colombo National Hospital.

The underworld figure was arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake upon his return from Nepal on September 13, 2023.

He was moved to the Boossa Prison in June last year on the orders of the Gampaha Magistrate’s Court.

“Ganemulla Sanjeewa,” who was remanded in custody at Boosa Prison, was escorted to court this morning by prison officials for court proceedings. (Newswire)
